Dispur, Jan 31: "Mahavir Chilarai was not only a warrior, he was an apostle of great human values. He was deeply oriented towards literature and worked for strengthening the Assamese society. People of the state must follow his footsteps to reinforce its identity throughout the world in the 21st century", Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal made this fervent call while speaking as chief guest in the 508th Birth anniversary celebration of Mahavir Chilarai at Gandhi Maidan in Mangaldai at Darrang district today. The celebration was organized by the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Assam in association with the Darrang district administration.

Stating that the youth must study Mahavir Chilarai's life and feats and follow his ideals, the Chief Minister said that the Koch-Rajbangshi people are very courageous, hardworking and honest and Bir Chilarai proved their abilities through his accomplishments. He also urged the Koch-Rajbongshi community to play an important role in the development narrative of the state and spreading the teaching of the great stalwart amongst the young generation.

"Mahavir Chilarai had a scientific approach towards life. He was compassionate towards all living beings and gave importance to plantation. He even didn't harass his captive enemies and exemplified human values through his works", Sonowal mentioned. Further saying that the youth of the state could draw inspiration from the celebration of Chilarai Divas, he called upon the people to reinforce brotherhood, harmony and friendship following his ideals.

The Chief Minister in his speech also outlined the initiatives taken up by the Government for giving a renewed boost to development in Darrang district. He informed that the state Government has already signed an MoU with the Government of Singapore to build a World Class Skill Development Centre in the district where around ten thousand youth would get the opportunity for training on various trades. He also mentioned that the Government would adopt measures for setting up one science centre and college at Mangaldai, Residential School and Industrial Estate at Sipajhar and preservation of peasant movement site at Patharughat.

Cultural Affairs Minister Naba Kumar Doley, MP Ramen Deka, MLA Gurujyoti Das, professor of NEHU Dr. Jyotirmoy Pradhani also delivered speech on the occasion. MLA Binanda Saikia, Chairman of Assam State Minority Development Board Mominul Awal, Chairman of Mangaldai Municipal Board Pratap Bordoloi, Director of Cultural Affairs Department Deba Prashad Mishra, Deputy Commissioner Ashok Barman, representatives of the Koch-Rajbongshi royal family, AKRSU, Koch-Rajbongshi Cultural Society and host of other dignitaries were also present in the programme.
