Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma

 

Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma succeeded Sarbananda Sonowal as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam and took the oath of office on 10 May 2021. Elected for the first time in 2001 from Jalukbari constituency, he has since then been representing the constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly by winning five consecutive elections – in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021. 


About 

Dr Sarma was born at Mission Hospital, Jorhat, on 1 February 1969 to Kailash Nath Sarma and Mrinalini Devi. 

After having passed his Senior Secondary exam from Kamrup Academy, Guwahati in 1985, he completed his Graduation in 1990 and Post-graduation in 1992 in Political Science from Cotton College and Gauhati University respectively. He earned his LLB from Government Law College, Guwahati and PhD from Gauhati University. 

In his stint as a Minister in the State Cabinet, Dr Sarma held several key portfolios like Agriculture, Planning & Development, Finance, Health, Education and Assam Accord Implementation from 2001 to 2021. 

Government of India in its various annual reports had singularly pointed out the achievements of the Health and Education departments of Assam. 

During his tenure as Education Minister of Assam, more than 50,000 teachers were appointed for the first time through TET after he abolished the system of interviews.
