State Govt releases Rs 600 crore for embankment repair
Dispur, December 22: Taking a serious view on the urgency of starting repairing work of embankments, State Government today released Rs. 600 crore for the revamp and repairing of dykes. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal issuing a direction has asked Water Resources Department to start repairing work by January 2, 2017.
Chief Minister Sonowal said, "This has been a long felt need of the people living in the flood prone areas to repair the embankments which act as a protection to them against surging flood", as he called upon people to tag along with the Deputy Commissioners to oversee the repairing works. This direction came in a meeting held at the conference room of Chief Minister's Office in the city today.
Sonowal also directed Water Resources Department to use its technical knowhow to revamp the embankments under Panchayat and Rural Development Department. Moreover, the repair work of an embankment which is predominantly used as a road in Dibrugarh district should be completed by January, Sonowal directed. The meeting also assessed the condition of the five dykes which are in critical condition and decided to earmark Rs. 50 crore for their protection.
Chief Minister also directed senior officers to undertake inspection and ensure quality of the repair work.
Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta, Commissioner and Secretary to the Chief Minister Sanjay Lohia, senior officers from Water Resources, Finance, Revenue and Disaster Management were also present at the meeting.
