Dispur, February 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi while inaugurating the first ever Global Investors' Summit in Guwahati today said that holding the Summit 'Advantage Assam' and the participation of galaxy of industrialists from across the spectrum and statesmen is a testimony that Assam is progressing.

Delivering his inaugural address Prime Minister Modi said that in the centre's Act East Policy, Assam and other North Eastern states have occupied an epicentre of India's relations with ASEAN and BBN countries. In this backdrop holding of Global Investors' Summit in Assam would usher in a new chapter of economic prosperity in the state. Modi hailed the initiative of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his team for auguring an investment and development friendly climate in the State which indeed has made possible for holding the Global Investors' Summit which has brought ASEAN and BBN countries together under the common umbrella.

Reiterating his commitment to the development of North East, Modi said Centre has pitched for transformation of North East through transportation and vowed to build 4000 km of national highways in the region. He also said that the railway is also investing Rs.5300 crore every year for the expansion of rail network in the state. He also informed that under PMGSY all the villages will be connected through motorable roads which will also connect schools, hospitals, markets etc in the rural areas and same would be completed by 2019 in place of the previously set target of 2022. Under UDAN scheme besides subsidised air services, 19 airports including 5 in Assam would be benefitted. Moreover, a new terminal of international standard would also be built in Guwahati, the Prime Minister added.

He also said that for a new India, a balanced development of North East is of paramount importance. He emphasised that apart from development of transportation the entire region would be connected with National Gas Grid. Moreover, Centre would launch a scheme christened North East Infrastructure Development Scheme for bolstering expeditious infrastructural development of the region.

Referring to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's priceless composition of 'Agnijog Firingoti Moi' which the bard composed when he was only 13 years old and through which Dr. Bhupen Hazarika dreamt of making a developed Assam, Modi said 'Advantage Assam' being underway would usher in resurgent Assam and would make help to make Assam of Bhupen Hazarika's dream. He also said that the centre along with Ease of Doing Business is also working for Ease of Living for the transformation of the lives of the people of the country.

Prime Minister of Bhutan Tshering Tobgay while speaking on the occasion said that the diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan started way back in January 1968, entered in its golden jubilee year as both the countries are working in tandem for strengthening their bilateral relations. Acknowledging the strategic location of Assam, Tobgay said that the bilateral relations between Bharat and Assam start from Assam. He also said that Bhutan will be benefitted greatly from the prosperity of Assam.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while terming the day as historic said that the Global Investors' Summit would enable the state to access to trillion dollar ASEAN economy and 800 million people. He also said that the Summit would reposition Assam as a state with immense potential, prosperity and possibility. Stating Advantage Assam as a humble beginning Sonowal put forward an array of diverse sectors especially agriculture, bamboo, tourism and organic sector for investment. He also thanked Bhutanese Prime Minister Tobgay for taking the initiatives of starting direct flight services between India, Bhutan and Singapore.

Union Minister for Industries and Commerce Suresh Prabhu while speaking on the occasion said that the centre is working to announce an exclusive Industrial Policy for the North East and draft for the same is at the final stage.

Managing Director Century Playboards Limited Sajjan Bhajanka said that his company would invest Rs. 6,400 crore in the state. Chairman cum Managing Director SpiceJet Ajay Singh said that his carrier would very shortly introduce flight services to Jorhat, Lakhimpur. Moreover, SpiceJet would also start flight services from Guwahati to other South East Asian Nations. Chief Executive Officer, Patanjali Acharya Balakrishna said that his company is investing in food processing in Assam as his company contributed to 92 percent of the total food processing in the state. Chairman Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani said that his company would invest 2.5 thousand crores for petrol pump, jio office in all 155 circle headquarters, the creation of livelihood opportunities, and setting up of state of the art football academy in the state.

Earlier, Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary gave the welcome address. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma delivered the vote of thanks. Moreover, Japanese Ambassador to India Kenji Hiramatsu, President FICCI Rashesh Shah, MD Sun Pharma Dilip Shanghvi, MD Tata Sons N. Chandrasekharan also spoke on the occasion.

Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Manipur, N. Biren Sing, Chief Minister Arunachal Pradesh Pema Khandu, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, DoNER Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain and a host of foreign and Indian dignitaries were present on the occasion.
