Dispur, June 20: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented Bishnu Rabha Award, 2018 to eminent sculptor Dr. Janak Jhankar Narzary and dance exponent Guneswar Bhuyan at the central Rabha Divas function held under the aegis of Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Assam in association with Kamrup metro district administration at Sonapur Mini stadium today. The award carries a cheque of rupees two lakh each, a citation, sharai and chelleng chadar.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the society to reinforce human values amongst the youth and indulge in hard work with dedication and perseverance. "Bishnu Prasad Rabha exemplified great human values, hard work and perseverance. He worked for a classless society and strengthened unity and harmony in our society. The students and youth must take lesson from his ideals and pay adequate respect to the legacy bequeathed to us by the legendary personalities of the state to promote peace, harmony, brotherhood and friendship", he said.

Underlining the huge contribution of Bishnu Prasad Rabha towards Assam's art and culture, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the cultural doyen worked to materialise his vision of a classless society through a cultural revolution. He moreover said that it is through culture that people could tackle the ills afflicting the society. He also stressed on orienting the youth with great human values for achieving the same.

Expressing deep concern over superstition and other forms of social evils prevailing in today's age of science and technology, Sonowal said that the people must join hands to work together to rid the society from these ills. He also emphasised on promoting spiritual and moral education amongst youth so that they could take the lead in unleashing reform in the society.

Further saying that it the responsibility of the parents to show their children the path of righteousness, Sonowal cautioned them that their responsibility do not end with admitting their children in good educational institutions alone. He also highlighted the role of mothers in building personality and character of the children saying that they could play a significant role in nurturing their offspring with moral and spiritual values and urged them to come forth to fight against superstition and social evils.

Further stating that the state government is working steadfast to realise the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'sabka sath, sabka vikash', the Chief Minister said that it was also the basic principle of Rabha's dream of a classless society. Bishnu Prasad Rabha raised his voice for the interest of every community of the state, Sonowal said adding that the government of Assam is also working to fulfil the need and expectations of the people living in the Barak-Brahmaputra valleys and hills and plains. The Chief Minister also underscored government's commitment to ensure equal development of all 65 lakh families of the state and said that several schemes are being implemented for benefit of artists, journalists, sports persons and other sections of the society. He also stressed on the government and the society working together to dispel negativity from the minds of the youth and promoting the habit of hard work amongst them.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the state government's fight against corruption and appealed the people to dissuade corrupt practices. He also urged the parents and teachers to play a more significant role in building the personality of the youth with ethical values. Sonowal also appealed the people to keep close watch over the functioning of the state government.

Minister of State for Cultural Affairs Naba Kumar Doley, Dispur MLA Atul Bora and West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita also delivered speech on the occasion highlighting the contributions of Bishnu Prasad Rabha to the Assamese society.

Recipients of Bishnu Rabha Award, 2018 Dr. Janak Jhankar Narzary and Guneswar Bhuyan also shared their thoughts and experience on receiving the award at the event.

Coinciding the function, Chief Minister Sonowal also felicitated ten distinguished persons of Sonapur area for their contribution to the society in different fields.

MP Pradan Baruah, chairman of Assam State Film Finance Corporation Jatin Bora, chariman of DNP Limited Rupam Goswami, Commissioner and Secretary of Cultural Affairs Department Pritam Saikia and Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup metro district Virendra Mittal were also present at the function. While the welcome address was delivered by Director of Cultural Affairs Department Barnali Sharma, the vote of thanks was offered by CEO Zila Parishad Ramen Malakar.
